Interesting how an "Israeli" ([Link: www.israelheute.com...] seems to be the primary source on this interview) suddenly becomes a "Jew" in the translation. There is a difference, of course.

Do you suppose American Jews will be welcome in Abbas' Palestine?

Why do you ask? This has nothing to do with falsification of the primary source. Abbas said what he said (if he did say it) and this should be relayed properly, without addition of private interpretations by the translators.

I will tell you my opinion though: if Abbas did say it (and it's still not properly sourced) it was likely aimed at those Arabs who want to take Israeli citizenship. There aren't many Jews who would want to live in the (future) Palestine.

I agree that the comment about Jews may have been mistranslated or altered. The original quote refers specifically to "Israelis", although it can be safely assumed that Abbas was talking exclusively about Jews. The quote, cited below from a reliable source (Khaled Abu Toameh in The Jerusalem Post on 12/25/10) is:

“We have frankly said, and always will say: If there is an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, we won’t agree to the presence of one Israeli in it,” Abbas told reporters in Ramallah.

It should be noted, of course, that Israel has a substantial Arab minority whereas Jordan, for example, is essentially free of Jews. Jordan has specifically prohibited Jews from being citizens (and for all practical purposes, from being residents) since its inception. Most of the other Arab and Muslim states have Jewish populations that have either dwindled to near extinction or vanished altogether. So, while I would agree that Abbas may not have been accurately quoted, the implications of his comments are no different whether he actually said "Jew" or "Israeli".

re: #3 Sergey Romanov

Sergey, can we cross-reference Abbas' present statement with his belief that there shouldn't have been an Israeli team in the 1972 Olympics? And the extent to which he would go to make sure his opinions became a reality? And if we can do that, can we draw any implications from the two instances?

Elephant in the room, guy.

re: #5 Bob Levin

I'm not sure what this is about. Do you agree that the translation is not correct? Samson does. What's the problem then? We know Abbas has no love for Jews lost, so if that's the point, it's kinda obvious, not breaking news.

re: #6 Sergey Romanov

I haven't seen the original, but I'll defer to you two.

You were arguing two different things, and not disagreeing. Perhaps the greater question is, what does it take for people to see Abbas' real intentions? His intentions are obvious, and not breaking news.

I don't know the answer. What does it take?

The bigger problem is that Abbas is "the best there is".
